Professor Geoff Palmer, formerly of Heriot Watt University, visited the History Department on 7th and 8th May to meet pupils in S2.  He gave a short lecture explaining Scotland's links with the slave trade.  The pupils were fascinated by Professor Palmer's telling of the story of Scotland's historic links with Jamaica through the slave trade, demonstrating the links with reference to names in the Jamaican phone directory (2500 Campbells alone!) and the names of towns in and places in Jamaica with a familiar Scottish sound....

Professor Palmer also answered questions from the pupils on each day and was hugely impressed by both the quality of the questions and how well the pupils listened.  They were a credit to the school.  He also kindly donated a copy of his own book "The Enlightenment Abolished" which also partly tells of Scotland's connection with Jamaica and slave trade.

The visit helped to give pupils a deeper understanding of the slave trade and the legacy it has left behind, not only in the West Indies, but also here in Scotland.

We are incredibly grateful to Professor Palmer for giving his time to be with us and share his knowledge with our pupils.
