S1 to S3 Broad General Education

Spanish is the second most spoken language by native speakers in the world, with more than 400 million Spanish speakers in 21 countries. Pupils may aim to travel, connect with new communities, or expand their career horizons by studying languages.

 

S1 – S3 learners develop their knowledge and understanding of Spanish language and culture. They engage with real-life scenarios and cover traditions, festivals, and the history of Spain.  Pupils learn to describe themselves, their families and the world around them. They become familiar with talking and listening activities, and work on accent and pronunciation.

 

Spanish teaches learners a wide range of skills:

Literacy skills through using a bilingual dictionary and grammar rules.

Communication skills through listening and talking exercises.

Digital literacy through use of iPads and interactive classwork.

 

In S3 Spanish, pupils complete their broad general education in Spanish and begin their National 3 or National 4 qualification.  They begin to cover topics in Learning, Society, Culture, and Employability.

 

S4 Level/Content (brief)

In Senior Phase Spanish learners can continue to enhance their Spanish language skills. The courses assess pupils through a combination of reading, writing, listening, and speaking components, including a performance and a writing assignment.

 

National 3

Each of the four skills are assessed. Topics such as hobbies and interests, food, and talking about your town are taught.

 

National 4

There is no exam at National 4, but learners must complete an Added Value Unit and pass individual assessments across each of the four skills.  Learners cover topics such as school life, family and friends, and the differences between living in Spain and Scotland.

 

National 5

Learners cover various topics, in more depth, across the contexts of Learning, Society, Culture, and Employability.

SQA Exam – consisting of a Reading / Translation (25%), Directed Writing (12.5%) and a Listening paper (25%).

Course assignment – writing (12.5%).

Talk assignment - a recorded talk (25%) with your teacher.

 

S5/6 Levels/Content (brief)

Higher

The course assessment has 3 components:

SQA Exam – consisting of a Reading / Translation (25%), Directed Writing (12.5%) and a Listening paper (25%).

Course assignment –  writing (12.5%).

Talk assignment - a recorded talk (25%) with your teacher.
