What will you learn about in Computing Science at Grangemouth High School? 

Broad General Education Courses for S1-S3 pupils:

 

S1 & S2 - Pupils are introduced to a broad range of digital and computational concepts that form the foundation of modern technology. They explore digital literacy and cyber resilience, learning how to use technology safely and responsibly while understanding online risks, privacy, and security. Through computational thinking, they develop problem-solving skills by breaking down tasks, recognising patterns, and designing algorithms.

Pupils engage in programming, starting with block-based tools like Scratch and progressing to simple text-based languages such as Python or HTML, allowing them to create games, animations, and basic websites. They also study computer systems, gaining knowledge about hardware components, data representation (including binary), and how computers process information.

Overall, the S1 & S2 Computing Science curriculum provides a hands-on, engaging introduction to the digital world while building skills for future learning.

S3 - Pupils build on the foundational knowledge from S1/2 and begin to explore more advanced concepts and practical applications. They deepen their understanding of software development, often working with text-based programming languages like Python to write, test, and debug more complex programs involving variables, loops, conditionals, and user input. Pupils also study computer systems in greater depth, including how data is represented in binary, the role of processors and memory, and how different components interact within a system. Web development is often introduced or extended, with learners creating structured web pages using HTML and CSS. They also engage with data representation, learning how text, numbers, images, and sound are stored and processed by computers. Cyber security remains a key theme, with pupils gaining a stronger understanding of threats, protections, and ethical issues. By the end of S3, learners are well-prepared to transition into National 4 or National 5 Computing Science qualifications.
