If you choose to do Higher Computing Science in S5 or S6 you will study:
Higher Computing Science builds on prior knowledge and develops advanced skills in software development, computer systems, databases, and web development, with a strong emphasis on problem-solving and computational thinking. In the software development unit, learners write, test, and debug complex programs using a high-level language such as Python, incorporating advanced constructs like functions, parameters, loops, arrays, and file handling. The computer systems unit covers how computers represent data using binary and ASCII, the structure and operation of processors, data storage, networking, and the environmental impact of computing. In databases, learners design and implement relational databases using SQL, focusing on data integrity, relationships, and query design. The web development unit involves creating interactive websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with attention to usability and consistency. Learners also complete an exam and an assignment worth 50 marks, where they apply their skills to develop a software solution to a given problem. The Higher course prepares students for further study in computing or related fields and provides valuable digital skills for a wide range of careers.
NPA Games Development
The NPA (National Progression Award) in Games Development introduces learners to the creative and technical processes involved in designing and developing computer games. The course typically includes three main units: Games Design, Media Assets, and Games Development. In the Games Design unit, learners explore how to plan and design a game by developing ideas, creating storyboards, defining gameplay mechanics, and identifying target audiences. The Media Assets unit teaches how to create and edit the visual, audio, and textual elements used in games, using tools to produce graphics, sounds, and animations. In the Games Development unit, learners use game development software (such as Unity, GameMaker, or Scratch) to bring their game designs to life, focusing on programming basics, testing, and improving their final product. Throughout the course, students develop skills in teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, and digital literacy, preparing them for further study or careers in the games or digital media industries. The NPA is available at SCQF levels 4, 5, and 6, allowing flexibility based on the learner’s experience and ability.
