What will you learn about in Computing Science at Grangemouth High School? 

Broad General Education Courses for S1-S3 pupils:

 

S1 & S2 Design & Technology - Introduces students to the fundamentals of design, graphic communication and practical problem-solving. The course aims to develop key skills such as creativity, critical thinking, and manual dexterity through hands-on projects and design tasks. Pupils typically explore product design, graphics, and the use of tools and materials in a workshop environment. They learn to follow the design process — from researching and planning to creating and evaluating — while also gaining an understanding of health and safety procedures. The subject helps build confidence in using a variety of equipment and encourages teamwork and independent learning.

S3 Graphic Communication - Students build key skills in visual literacy and communication through the study and creation of graphics. The course covers both 2D and 3D graphic techniques, using manual sketching and drawing alongside industry-standard digital tools such as CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software. Pupils learn to produce and interpret technical drawings, create presentations and promotional materials, and develop an understanding of design principles including layout, colour theory, and typography. The course also explores how graphics are used in real-world contexts such as engineering, architecture, media, and marketing. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, clarity, and creativity, as well as developing problem-solving and spatial awareness skills. This provides a strong foundation for further study in Graphic Communication or related design and technology subjects

S3 Design & Manufacture - Students build on their prior knowledge to explore more advanced concepts in product design and practical manufacturing. The course focuses on developing creative and technical skills through the design process, encouraging pupils to research, sketch, model, and evaluate their ideas. Students gain a deeper understanding of materials (such as woods, metals, and plastics), manufacturing processes, and the impact of design on society and the environment. They use a combination of traditional hand tools and modern technologies to produce high-quality prototypes and finished products. The course also emphasizes problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking, preparing learners for further study or a career in design, engineering, or related fields.

S3 Practical Woodworking - Students develop hands-on skills through a range of woodworking projects that focus on precision, craftsmanship, and safe working practices. The course introduces learners to a variety of woodworking techniques, including measuring, marking out, cutting, shaping, and joining wood using both hand tools and machinery. Pupils work with different types of timber and manufactured boards to create functional and decorative items, learning about the properties and uses of materials as they go. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, attention to detail, and finishing techniques to produce high-quality outcomes. Health and safety is a core element throughout the course, and students also gain problem-solving and planning skills that are valuable for further study or future careers in trades and construction-related industries.

This is 50mb plus, so may take a minute to download. These notes cover most - not all - of the GK Written Questions knowledge required in the exam. It's a condensed version of all the notes on the School Shared Network.

 Young Women into Engineering in Association with CITB and ICE Scotland

Six pupils along with Miss Graham attended the “Young Women into Construction Activity Day”. This formed part of celebrating Scottish Apprenticeship week overlooking the site where three bridges will span three centuries at the Forth Bridge Education Centre. The event was run in partnership with CITB and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Scotland.

The Institution of Civil Engineers also launched a Scottish campaign to promote ”Eng Tech Now" and had pupils building a 5 metre bridge as part of this launch.

Grangemouth High School were invited along with St Columba's High School and Queensferry High School to take part in this fantastic event.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed the event and returned to school enthused about engineering and design. Thanks to Sharon Edgar, CITB Construction Careers Advisor and Mrs Campbell for giving us the opportunity to participate in such a great event.
