Aims of the Department
- To provide knowledge and skills which will build confidence and enjoyment in Food Technology.
- To help Young people develop their understanding of a healthy diet.
- To develop the knowledge and skills required to enable young people to make informed decisions essential for good health.
- To help young people develop their knowledge and skills to plan and safely prepare dishes to meet their own needs and those of others.
- To develop in young people organisational skills and the technology capability necessary to meet the needs of individuals and family members within a rapidly changing society.
Broad General Education Courses for S1-S3 pupils:
S1 & S2 Food Technology students are introduced to the fundamental skills and knowledge needed for everyday living, focusing on food preparation, nutrition, and basic cooking techniques. The course covers healthy eating principles, food hygiene, and safety, helping pupils understand the importance of balanced diets and how to make informed food choices. The subject encourages practical hands-on learning through cooking while developing skills such as planning, problem-solving, and time management. Overall, Food Technology aims to build a foundation of confidence and independence in managing personal and family wellbeing
S3 – Practical Cookery students build on their foundational food preparation skills by exploring more complex cooking techniques and a wider variety of ingredients. The course emphasizes the principles of nutrition, food safety, and hygiene, encouraging pupils to plan, prepare, and cook balanced and healthy meals. Students learn to work independently and collaboratively in the kitchen, developing skills in measuring, mixing, baking, and cooking using different methods. The curriculum also covers aspects of meal planning, budgeting, and understanding dietary needs and food choices. Through practical, hands-on experience, pupils gain confidence, creativity, and a deeper understanding of how to prepare nutritious food for themselves and others.
S3 Childcare - Ideal for students interested in careers in teaching, nursery work, childcare, social care or youth work. Builds transferable life and workplace skills. Develops confidence, empathy, and responsibility. A stepping stone into further education or vocational training in childcare or education.
