If you choose to do National 3 or 4 in Food Technology in S4 you will study:
In N3 or N4 Practical Cookery, students develop a number of areas across all national qualification levels.
Students at all levels cover the following units:
Cookery Skills, techniques & processes: Learn and practice a range of cooking methods (boiling, grilling, frying, roasting, baking etc.), knife skills and food preparation techniques. Make dishes following recipes with growing independence as you move up levels.
Understanding & Using Ingredients: Study of ingredients: where they come from; their properties; how they behave in cooking (e.g. how eggs behave differently in baking vs custards); dietary roles; issues like seasonality and sustainability.
Organisational Skills for Cooking: Planning the preparation of dishes; managing time in the kitchen; portioning; cost; sequencing of tasks so that different parts of a meal are ready at the same time; using recipes and working safely and hygienically.
At National 4 there is an Added Value Unit: e.g. planning, preparing and serving a complete meal (2 courses) to a specification.
SfW Childcare
This course is ideal for students interested in working with children or exploring careers in education, early years, or health and social care. It provides an introduction to the early learning and childcare sector, helping you build the practical skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to work with young children in a safe, caring, and stimulating way.
The course is practical, engaging, and closely linked to real-life settings, preparing you for further study or work in the childcare field.

Feeding young children – including weaning, bottle-feeding, and healthy meals for toddlers
Care routines – such as nappy changing, dressing, sleep routines, and bath time
Health and hygiene – understanding cleanliness, sterilisation, and infection control
Safety – identifying risks and learning how to create a safe environment for young children
